Let's explore this unique place and get photographed in front of one of the many blue domes scattering around.
When visiting Oia, we cannot miss the opportunity to go and see ,The Kasteli of Agios Nikolas(Saint Nikolas).
This renowned site is nothing other than the Venetian castle of Agios Nikolaos which is named after a beautiful church carved in a rock, dedicated to Agios Nikolaos.
Its existence dates back to the late 15th century when the menacing pirate raids were incessant. In that era the Cycladic islands were under the rule of the Franks. The castle stood at the top of the settlement in order to serve as an observation point. It was very well fortified and there were remarkable residences inside, which belonged to the Venetian rulers.
Today, this location provides magnificent views on the breathtaking caldera, the volcanic islands and the vast Aegean Sea.
Many unique scenes from several films have been filmed in this famous castle. Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft in the action-packed film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) which was shot in Santorini. Also, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants was filmed in 2005 and the second part in 2008. An Italian film D' Agostino (2011). Furthermore, Santorini Blue' movie in (2013) was filmed here and earlier in 1982, the movie, Summer Lovers!
The beauty of Oia is unsurpassed. It is a place where one can spend a couple of hours, a day, or a lifetime!
Third Stop: Monastery of Prophet Elias
Our journey continues to the highest point on Santorini!Perched at 567 meters above sea level, the Monastery of Profitis Elias (Prophet Elias) offers sweeping views of the island that will take your breath away.
Constructed in 1711, the monastery was built like a fortress and showcases the timeless beauty of Cycladic architecture. In the past, it was more than a place of worship—it was a center of learning, where students were taught Greek language and literature.
Inside, a captivating museum awaits, filled with ecclesiastical treasures, rare manuscripts, and intricate Byzantine icons. You’ll also find displays of traditional crafts, including shoemaking, printing, and candle-making.
A few monks continue to live here, crafting wine and other local products that visitors can sample and buy.
Climb to the top and soak in the 360° panoramic view—perfect for photography, reflection, or simply enjoying the island’s beauty. When the sun sets, the sky turns into a canvas of color, making this spot truly magical.
Fourth Stop: Perissa-Perivolos Black Beach
Perissa is a coastal village, located on the southeastern edge of the island.
The reason most visitors come to Perissa is to take pleasure in the extraordinary beach!
The scenery of the black lava sand, along with the sandy sea bottom and the dark blue, crystal clear waters compose is impressive. It is one of the longest and most famous beaches in Santorini, a characteristic sight of the volcanic island.
It is worth noting that it received the "Blue flag" award, as it is very clean and tidy.
Perissa beach is a fully organized cosmopolitan beach with an abundance of comfortable sunbeds, umbrellas, and other amenities.
At the end of the beach there is a suggested diving location if you are bold enough to dive. You can choose from a wide variety of water sports, from wind surfing and parasailing to jet skiing, canoeing and banana boats that will rock your experience. The volcanic eruptions led to the formation of this beautiful site.
Its surroundings by enormous volcanic rocks, the black and red pebbles and the sand of various colors, mainly red, compose a wild scenery that attracts all the visitors and captivates everyone from the minute they step their foot on this stunning place.
A unique spectacle and a site of rare beauty.
So get ready to visit it and be amazed!
Sixth Stop: Fira, the Capital
Final destination is Fira!
Fira is the beautiful capital of the island and the biggest and most cosmopolitan settlement of Santorini. It is located in the western edge of the island, opposite the volcano and the two volcanic islands, Palaia Kammeni and Nea Kammeni that lie in the sea.
The town is fairly small so you can walk from one end to the other in half an hour. But along the way there is a maze of alleyways to explore, with hidden chapels, arching doorways, tucked away viewpoints, colourful flowers and sunbathing cats.
Fira is such a modern spectacle and tourist destination that it’s sometimes easy to look past its incredible history. After one of the world’s largest volcanic eruptions in prehistoric times, the island went deserted for some centuries.
Around 13th Century BC, it would be inhabited by Phoenicians, followed by the Dorians who started the settlement of Ancient Thera. The first church was constructed somewhere during the 3-4th century when Christianity arrived on Santorini.
Fira is an ideal place to wonder around, as there is no way of getting lost here.
You can walk through the cobbled streets that are full of little shops, allowing you to experience the beauty of Fira and the amazing view of the Aegean Sea.
The main attraction of Fira is Metropoli church, the Orthodox Cathedral,
that is an easy-to-find place to meet someone. Its big, beautiful, white arches cannot be missed and form a beautiful background for your pictures. This remarkable church is a great sample of modern Cycladic architecture making the town much more special.
The church was built in 1827 and offers an impressive view of the caldera and the volcano.
In 1956, the building was damaged during the catastrophic earthquake but renovated soon after.
It is a beautiful cathedral with an enchanting mosaic on the outside and an impressive bell tower.
Rolling arches create a peaceful courtyard. The church's inside is adorned with beautiful frescoes made by the local artist Christoforos Asimis.

If you're a cruise-ship passenger:
You will disembark in Santorini by tender boats arriving only at the old port of Fira.
To find the exit of the cable car in Fira follow these steps:
- Take a tender boat from your cruise ship
- Once ashore, go to the cable car
- Pay a ticket of 10 Euros per person (one way), take a cable car ride up to Fira town (3 min.)
- Exit the cable car building.
- Behind the gate, our guide or driver will be holding an Santorini Tour Lovers sign with your name on it.
✅The stairs bring you next to the cable car exit but we strongly recommend using the cable car for your convenience.
⚠️The old port of Santorini, called Skala, located in Fira (where cruise ships dock), is not accessible by car.
1. Cable Car : The Santorini cable car is a donation from the LOULA & EVAGGELOS NOMIKOS Foundation, created to serve both locals and thousands of visitors throughout the year. Completely safe, it consists of six wagons, each with a capacity of six people. The fare is €10 per adult and €6 per child, one way. Payment can be made by cash or card.
2.Stairway: Climbing the 588-steps stairway will take about 20-30 minutes depending on your physical condition. The main challenge, besides keeping your stamina, is avoiding the donkeys that use the path.
3. Donkeys: While donkeys can be hired to take you up the hill, we strongly advise against it. The donkeys used to be the traditional transportation way of the island. They go up and down to the old port of Fira frequently. The price is 10 euro about per person (per way) and the ride lasts about 20 minutes. It’s not safe, and we oppose any form of animal exploitation.
The donkeys arrive at a different place in Fira, not to the cable car exit.
The old port of Santorini, called Skala (where cruise ships dock), is not accessible by car.
